I belong to a Team called the Music Oasis.  We primarily play our own original music and host shows for other musicians in virtual worlds.  I thought would share with you the experience of putting on an EDM music show in Virtual Worlds.  We worked with the Wookey Technologies Sansar Team and Shangri-La in putting on a Virtual World based version of Glastonbury’s Shangri-La festival called Lost Horizons.  This online festival was across 3 virtual world stages over two days and had an impressive line up including Carl Cox and Fatboy Slim playing at the festival.  The virtual world build was done using the Sansar Software and was a very impressive virtual rendition of the physical Glastonbury stages.

Here is a picture of Carl working the virtual crowd.  People that attended in Sansar had avatars they could customize and dress and basically it was like playing a Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game like Fortnite except you were attending an EDM concert instead of slaying dragons with your guild.  Our team would go from stage to stage helping the people attending the performances with any technical issues they were having either with VR hardware or just their PC.  Sansar can be visited just using your computer like a regular PC game or if you own a VR headset you can visit wearing that.

The performers were shot in front of a green screen and then projected into the 3D world.  Here is a close up of Carl Cox using this technique.  One of the hardest issues was working with all the artists go get good video of them in front of green screens.  But, it was one way to at least get to work with some EDM heroes.

As an aside, a couple of weeks after this event Fat Boy Slim actually attended one of my EDM sets in another Sansar based Festival called Stereowave that I was performing at.  I felt almost famous for about an hour …. lol…..

Working the Shangri-La Virtual Festival was a lot of work, but, also a lot of fun.  We have been involved in a number of these Virtual Festivals including the Lucky Cat Festival with 10 DJ/Producers, the Global DJ Festival with 12 DJ Producers and of course StereoWave.  Even though we are still in our infancy when it comes to Virtual Music Festivals, I think the future is bright.
